Plan

I always put on paper a plan that meticulously outlines all the steps I would be taking and how much time is needed to accomplish the goal. If it is not put on paper, it will more likely be forgotten or put on the back burner. The power of planning is crucial to your learning journey. One study has shown that only 3% of all adults in the United States put their plans on paper. Unless it’s a vacation, most people have no desire to plan. The Law of Diminishing Intent says, “The longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it.”

Most effective learners understand the power of planning. It gives them a course of action, clarity, and reminds them of the goals their soul desires. I am going to get more specific about how to plan before you start learning a new language. While planning, always ask yourself these three questions :

1. Where am I now?

2. Where do I want to go?

3. What specific steps do I need to take to get there?

Answering the first question, “Where am I now?” will determine your starting point so you can track your learning progress throughout your journey. For instance, when I first started learning Spanish, I knew a few Spanish words here and there. What I did was write in my journal any Spanish word that I could remember, which gave me an approximate word count. I repeated the process every month by tracking down my vocabulary-building progress.

Now, that might sound a little too meticulous, but tracking down details and improving on them is what has gotten my road to learning five languages achievable and enjoyable at the same time. This is just one example, you can apply the same method on all the pillars of the target language, such as grammar, pronunciation rules, and so on .

Now you know where you are, that’s great. Let’s explore the second question, “Where do I want to go?” After you determine the starting point, now it’s time to really define your destination. The way I do it is to ask myself, “How will the future look like? Where am I heading? And then I visualize how it will feel when I am able to speak the new language. How it will enable me to interact with the natives and explore new traditions. Just be daring, adventurous, and creative as you dare to dream and take a few minutes to experience the reality of what achieving the goal would be like.

We, humans, are blessed with the power of creating our future. Look around, all the things we are enjoying were once just an idea. Someone once must have imagined talking to someone through a video screen, long before inventing video calling apps and devices. The power of imagination is what keeps these improvements occurring and allows us to reach these high levels of inventions others would never dream of. It is what made landing humans on the moon a reality.
